BJP MP Dilip Ghosh received a show-cause notice from the Election Commission on Wednesday in response to his comments criticizing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This happened just hours after the BJP demanded an explanation from Ghosh and the Trinamool Congress filed a complaint. The prominent lawmaker also expressed regret for his statements made earlier on Wednesday.

"Didi (CM Mamata Banerjee) refers to herself as the daughter of Goa when she travels there. She claims to be Tripura's daughter when she visits the city. In the now-viral video footage, Ghosh could be heard saying, "She should first identify her own father."

"Offensive, insulting, and prima facie violative of the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct," was how the European Commission described the remarks. Ghosh has been requested to reply to the notification by Friday at 5 p.m.

Hours after the BJP demanded an explanation, Ghosh apologized for the remark on Wednesday morning. He also admitted that there were concerns about his word choice among his party's supporters and the broader public.
"If that is the case, I apologize for it.Since I say it to the face of everybody who does something wrong, this is not the first time a dispute has erupted over my remarks," he stated.

"We were given the assurance yesterday by the Election Commission that they will investigate... Minister Shashi Panja of West Bengal stated, "We said that some severe action has to be taken against Dilip Ghosh because he always uses this kind of language."
In addition, TMC spokesman Kunal Ghosh has demanded that the electoral board withdraw Ghosh's candidacy from the Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha seat.
